In the fouteenth century, chalk and lime were quarried at Greenhithe. Chalk from the area was used to repair Hadleigh Castle in Essex
The Ingress Estate was a seat in the hamlet of Greenhithe until the Dissolution of the Monasteries when King Henry VIII rebuilt a country retreat for himself on the site
